comment Recommendations for substitution of non-free fonts with LaTeX typefaces?
I know about the catalogue, and I probably use it for this particular substitution, although it would take some time to study the fonts. But the suggestions from Wikipedia are not free (or not made for LaTeX), and I'd have to find substitutes for them as well.. But I was more curious about the recommendation engine, whether there's such a thing.

I know that I can use TrueType fonts with (Xe)LaTeX if I jump through some hoops (and we do have a license to use Gill Sans), and if there's no other way to do it, I will -- but I'd rather try to find a good replacement first that is ready to use out-of-the-box with LaTeX. Besides, it would be illegal for students to do so without obtaining a proper license.

Well, it was mostly programming-oriented, and most of the algorithms were quite well-known, although I used them with modifications and in different context. And you can't really make a reference for a GUI :)

That's correct. Until you clarified what you need so much parameters for, I assumed it's for a macro, and you'd use the keyval interface. But of course in that case it's better with plain TeX.

Additionally, perhaps voting for this question could work a bit different --- if someone plans to attend a certain event, upvote it. How does that sound?

This is the same what Bran has written in the first comment.

TBH, I've never used TikZ so far, but I guess it's time to give it a try for the next paper. I make all kinds of diagrams, mostly engineering-oriented (e.g. free-body diagrams, component loads and such), but sometimes more generic boxes-and-arrows stuff.

That's useful --- if only the Inkscape version required was released. Still, it mostly goes around the problem and there's an intermediate format, but at least pdflatex is supposed to detect changes in the SVG -- which is mostly what I need.
