I'm a biologist, mostly working in theoretical aspects of animal populations as well as solving 1001 other little problems. I spend my days in the coding dungeon and my tool of trade is R. I find it very useful for running simulations, doing data manipulation, statistics and shooting oneself in the foot (fortunes() pun intended). I am no stranger to field biology, where I mostly work with plants, butterflies and hoverflies.

I am also a PhD candidate in biostatistics at University of Ljubljana. I work with capture-mark recapture techniques and I fancy simulations. My other interests are computer vision, ecological modeling, data visualization and algorithms.

comment LaTeX figures side by side
That % at the end of \end{subfigure} seems to be very important if you want the images to be side by side. :)

comment knitr and biblatex
The message seems to be very explicit. As a temp fix, you can run pdflatex on that .tex file again (outside Rstudio).

Show us a reproducible example. Do you have use texi2dvi enabled? rstudio.org/docs/using/customizing

comment Dynamically count and return number of words in a section
Can you not just estimate the number of words, add some noise to the made up number and enter that? I think if the person responsible for processing your proposal is going to count the words, he/she needs to rethink his or her priorities. :)

comment \SweaveInput{…} with UTF-8 encoding?
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} doesn't work for you? I've used this on Windows and Linux and it worked both times. I must wonder, though, what is your real problem with encoding (image text not using localized characters?)?

comment Typesetting a directed, weighted graph with TikZ
If I'm not mistaking, you could something like that in R, and include the graphic either via a pdf, or automatically via Sweave.
