Do you mean like what the spy library in TikZ does?

Hmm, I suppose this is less a TeX question and more a "programming" question (probably best asked on stack overflow). Anyhow, which OS are you using? Grep (Linux/Windows) can probably handle this with ease.

It appears it does not work for special characters, but I have no idea why. Probably you should ask a new question about it?

I answered a similar question here, you can adapt it for instance by altering the raise key, probably also by myking it an argument of the macro.

If you'd use a matrix, then probably I could make up something along the lines of this answer.

@Qrrbrbirlbel: Hehe, I also thought of this as I once did it that way. I was always changing the number of loops, as few looked too bad and many took too long ;)

You could also use a foreach loop for that: \foreach \c in {0,...,3} together with \node[shift={(90*\c:1.5pt)}]. This would make it easier to modify the number of copys and distances.

@Jake: D'oh! That key sounded oddly familiar, and checking old documents I found that I already used it in the past, but forgot about it. I'll update my post in a few minutes.
