comment Picking the fill color based on a value (some kind of heatmap)
Somrthing like this? If you want solid, non-shaded colors you can delete e.g outer color amd change inner color to fill.

comment Waterfall chart
@maetra: Thanks! Just one more thing: Do you need different styles for the bars and the drops? So that e.g the labels on the green and grey bars can be styles differently?

comment Plotting inequalities on a number line
You could also use the |-syntax: \draw [red, thick, -stealth] (5,0) |- ++(-5,0.5);

comment drawing a complex object by incorporating shapes
Hmm, its quite old, but perhaps the \unionclip in this answer helps?

comment Tikz/PGFPlots produce different graphs when compiled on my desktop and ShareLaTeX
Welcome! Perhaps this is due to different pgfplots versions? As you don't set any compat=<version> option, it will run in backwards compatibility mode. Do you get any warning regarding this?

Elegantly working around the problem and showing twice as many faces. Nice!

comment Trouble with expansion
I know what you mean. When I was struggling with this I kept wondering why it wasn't working when it obviousely put out the expected text. Especially bad if you're used to just using a function to return the argument of another function as you would do in e.g. Python.

comment Trouble with expansion
You're welcome! As I was struggeling a lot with this myself a few years back I'm glad to be able to spare you the trouble.

To catch the output of \StrSubstitute, you'll need to use the optional output parameter; something like \StrSubstitute{}{}{}[\OutputMacro]. Then afterwards you can use \def\mattetemp{\OutputMacro}.

comment How can I draw this in LaTeX?
Welcome! The wisenheimer answer would be "by using TikZ". What have you tried so far? Anything in particular you're struggling with?

comment How to format paper for research article?
With \twocolumn you can start a new two column page, or for even more columns an options, the multicol package. For a font to use with pdfTeX, have a look at the LaTeX font catalogue.

comment Fill an ellipse with random dots
@danielg: The clip command is very useful. Hoever, all commands following it will be clipped. To keep the effect local, you can put the clip and relevant commands in a scope.

Yeah, definitely looks nice, I'll remember this for future applications :D

comment Fill an ellipse with random dots
However, that does not appear truly random. With that many dots one would expect some clustering and overlaps, right?

comment How to draw a solid colored circle?
If you've already loaded color or xcolor (or a package that automaticall loads it, such as TikZ) you could also use the \textcolor command, e.g. \textcolor{red}{$\bullet$}

comment drawing a complex object by incorporating shapes
"Questions about how to draw specific graphics that just post an image of the desired result are really not reasonable questions to ask on the site. Please post a minimal compilable document showing that you've tried to produce the image and then people will be happy to help you with any specific problems you may have. See minimal working example (MWE) for what needs to go into such a document."

comment Leave 1cm blank space between each bar
@Alenanno: Indeed, but sometimes people have quite unusual requirements. While "blank" seems more likely you can't know for sure. That's why clarification would be nice.
