(La)TeX is user-friendly. It's just that it choses its friends with care.

comment Missing space after “ø” \o
AFAIK the space marks the end of the command \o. Otherwise the system has no way to recognize where the end of a command is. That's also why it is gobbled and vanishes. Otherwise you would have difficulties writing words with an \o in the middle.

comment How does one construct an abstract (n × n) empty grid of squares?
Welcome to TeX.SX! I added the picture you linked to the question. Later, with more reputation points earned, you will be able to do it yourself. Happy TeXing! :)

comment TikZ: Symmetric matrix without upper diagonal elements
If you just use the proper number of cell delimiters (&) without any cell content, it should work. Of course if you read the matrix from an external source, you need to think about something else... but with your MWE, this should be ok.

comment How to “force” LaTeX to respect the page width
That has to do with the penalties defined in LaTeX. Their values tell the system what is preferable if no optimum can be achieved, i.e. in your case whether it is better to leave a line 'underfull' or just let something hang into the margin a bit. Of course you can manually set these values to 'force' the type of behavior you're after (to be used with caution). You can find more info in TeX by Topic for instance.

That's certainly possible. Could you post a sample/sketch of what you have in mind? And any coding attempt you may have?

You always want it on the left margin? No change between even and odd pages?

comment How do you add the second reference?
You need to specify the type of reference for the second one too. I gather it's the same type as the first, so it should read: @misc{GDP:2013,.
