comment Arrow tip center with TikZ (and pgfplots)
No, more \addplot [markstart] coordinates { (0,0) (0.04,0.03) (.5,.5) };, i. e. automatically skipping of the coordinates inside of the ring. But that's just a bonus question, I added it mainly to show the picture as mentioned in the comment to your answer. The suggestion in your comment could as well be achieved by ... node [...,pos=0] {}, or am I wrong about that?

Thanks, that works even with pgfplots, albeit giving some strange looking results under special conditions (I will add an example picture to the question). Nevertheless, a solution with automatic computation would be handy, even better if it integrates into the arrows syntax.

Thanks for the suggestion, that's what I do for the simple cases, but it is e. g. not possible for pgfplots curves.

comment TikZ - Is it possible to draw this block diagram?
My approach in these cases is to generate a pdf “image” from the original pdf by extracting the page with the figure, removing all unnecessary content and removing the white borders, but you would need a pdf editor such as adobe acrobat for this. But if file size does not matter and you can live with content from the original pdf being hidden but accessible in your presentation, you could use the clip, trim and page options of the \includegraphics command from the graphicx package to include the original pdf.

Thanks, Stefan, that solves my problem. With your experience, can you tell me if this is a bug and worth a bug report? Or is there some concept I don't understand that causes this behaviour? (I tend to believe it's a bug but am not sure.)

comment Special decoration for TikZ pin feature
@cfr: Maybe my sketch is a bit misleading. I want the pin edges to always look the same, independent of the drawn angle or the given angle, and I want one style for bend left–bend right and one for bend right–bend left. I guess the TikZ internals know about the angle and start and end coordinates of the drawn edge, which would allow, if one could access them, to define the parameters in and out in the right way, or maybe spline control points or whatever. Something like out=drawn_angle+30°, in=drawn_angle-30°. Is this more clear?

comment Special decoration for TikZ pin feature
@HarishKumar: This would set a fix angle, but what I need is a solution that takes the angle of the line into account, so that I can define arbitrary pin angles but maintain the overall look (I know that the pin angle and the pin line's angle are not necessarily equal, what makes it even more difficult for me to find a solution, otherwise I could maybe somehow access the angle in the code and calculate the in and out angles).

Thanks again, @Paul Gaborit, I'll accept the answer, but I'm still interested in the reasons behind this behaviour of the arc to gain a better understanding of pgf.

Thanks, Paul, for the working solution. Can you explain why this extra line is needed? In my example there's no visible difference but I can imagine cases where the extra line is problematic. Is there a solution without it?
