comment \unexpanded fails with undefined LaTeX symbols?
The actual material I am writing to an auxiliary file is tex for later processing. The later processing uses a different set of macros than the original file does. There was an option in the macro to also reproduce the exported text at the point of export in the original tex file (original usage called for the same set of macros to be available at the first run as well as when the auxiliary output was processed). So the original processing attempted to evaluate \undefsym when placing the output in the first output file; the export itself was done perfectly.

User error. Question retracted. I would never have found it, though, without your help. Should I just delete the question?

comment Add second enumeration item on the same line?
This seems like a lower-overhead solution than the one proposed in the next answer; thanks. However, it has the obvious disadvantage of requiring the \inlineitem arguments to be {}-delimited. Is there an easy way around that problem? (\item in the basic list processing clearly doesn't require this). I don't know if I'll end up using this or not in the end -- it's a choice between huge amounts of whitespace, and somewhat odd-looking packing of list elements on a line.

That works great for the one-offs (like fixing up the document at the very end). But is there an approach that will avoid the problem altogether?

comment Odd interaction of secnumdepth and section-based counters
Interesting. The documentation for secnumdepth (and subsection*) don't mention actually not incrementing the counter - they just say the counter is not printed. Anyway, this worked fine. Thanks.
