comment hanging indents
Thanks - I guess this had nothing to do with the textpos package. Can you explain why the solution in the example did not work?

comment Does a tool exist which can take a LaTeX equation and convert it to a format suitable for evaluation in Wolfram's Mathematica?
Is there a similar capability for Maple? All I can find in the documentation is the reverse - LateX export.

comment Downsides of using \par instead of two new lines
Just to elaborate on this answer - using \par is very hard to read because it is visually difficult to identify paragraph breaks. Blank lines are much more natural to the human reader of the source.

I just use a centered arrow with R_i \leftrightarrow R_j above it for row swaps. Not optimal, I agree. Any such notation is going to be awkward in one way or another, as you say, but in the tradeoff between incredible verbosity (saying all the transitions in words) and some awkwardness but more brevity, I choose brevity.

comment Formatting arrows between rows of corresponding matrices
I was initially confused when the textbook I was writing for used the aligned-arrows notation. But I came to realize that it's actually pretty clear visually, while the notation above is unclear as to which rows are being modified in what manner. In any case, TH's answer seems just about as easy to use, and more flexible. Thanks.

Thanks. I probably should have known that but didn't. Is that the right way to increase row spacing so that for example you can use display-style fractions in arrays as well?

comment Need macro to ignore specific even-numbered inputs
Yes, at most one comma. {x.y.z,a.b.c} means that the exercise was numbered x.y.z in the previous edition but is now numbered a.b.c. If x.y.z is not present (comma only), then a.b.c is a new exercise in this edition.

comment Autosizing two-column layouts
That would be wonderful, but sadly I cannot do that because I don't have control over the figure sizes and the publisher does have requirements on the final apparent size of the figures.

I admit I'm more than a little surprised that there is no short-cut available. I can't believe I'm the first person (or even the hundredth) to have this problem.
