comment Position text next to rectangle in TikZ
Is it possible that the size of the rectangle I specify be exact/fixed/absolute, rather than "minimum"? If the text in {} is too long, the rectangle is enlarged. I need all the rectangles to be exact/fixed/absolute sizes, to scale, so I don't want them to ever grow in size. I'd rather see the text overflow and then change the text to something shorter.

I've added a note to my question with an example illustrating what I mean about the positioning.

Thanks for the answer. I need to produce several such rectangles (above each other vertically, but at different starting x positions and of different x sizes) all to scale and positioned according to the x value. Your solution places the rectangle at a different x position to mine, so I'm figuring that out first. I think in your example, the labels are counting towards the width and/or the positioning of the entire structure.

comment How to add a side-bar non-intrusively over more than one paragraph?
The bar is not placed correctly when multiple paragraphs and/or page-breaks are involved.

Duplicate of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/33316/…, but the accepted answer here is better IMO as it does not require \vspace.
