I have no idea; Ask someone who understands LaTeX map files and such. I'm sure it can be done, I just don't know HOW or I would have made it into an answer.

Wouldn't it be easiest to map some unused part of ASCII (say an old control character that isn't used anymore) to @ and . in the font files, then let them copy and paste the wrong thing?

What version of LaTeX did you compile with? PDFTeX? LuaTeX? Does it change if you use the other?

I like how Cygwin is strange enough it counts as a separate OS.

comment Will cruft from a previous compile ever change the final look of my document
@cmhughes It is common language among computer people, and in the Oxford English Dictionary. The usage I used means 'stuff that builds up over time' which is similar, if note quite the same as the wikipedia definition

So for example, I'll never have floats moving around due to compiling with an old log file? That is good to know, thank you.

comment What does this error mean and why does it keep moving?
@MartinSchröder Ah, I'll just stop using old style numbers then. LuaTeX doesn't support some features of microtype I need on occasion yet. (As of the microtype 2.4 manual)

@wasteofspace You should really make an answer out of that, so more people see it.
