Thanks alot for your answer! I already suspected that it was some kind of expansion issue, but I know too little about (La)TeX to solve such kind of problem. I slightly modfied your example so that I can use a globel switch for all tables, and it works perfectly now!

Thanks for this advice, but manually specifiying the table breaks is not an option in this case.

In the links provided by egreg, it says that supertabular does NOT work with multicols!: "together with the package multicols you can only use the tabbing environment." "+1 for the comment on supertabular not working with multicols. it's too bad but it helps to know in advance before wasting hours trying to tweak the settings..."

Well, the workaround in the first question allows you to use longtabu in two-column-mode, but it does not add the longtabu headers! Neither at the column breaks nor at the page breaks. That renders longtabu rather useless..

Sure, that's why I'm asking for a workaround or alternative.

comment Automagically scale Tikz-Picture AND use Externalization
Thanks for your quick help! Your code works fine when everything is kept in a single file. However, my setup was slightly more complicated: - Code split across many files - I used "todonotes" (which uses Tikz), and I did not want that graphics to be externalized - I used "\tikzsetnextfilename{...}" on my images - Tikz pictures are stored in seperate files (each starting with "\begin{tikzpicture}...") Doesn't sound too difficult, but there were a few hours of that typical LaTeX-pain-in-the-ass-fun, until everything worked. Thanks for your answer, it helped me a lot on that way!
