I'm a Post-Doctoral Fellow in atmospheric remote sensing at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I first came to Stack Exchange for practical reasons: Tex.SE has been of major help when I wrote my licentiate (midterm) thesis. Since then, I have discovered the joy of many websites. As my network profile will show, I'm interested in travel, outdoor, scientific skepticism, and as I work in academia, also in academia and LaTeX.

Please provide a "Minimum Working Example", some LaTeX code that we can copy-paste to try to reproduce your problem. Please also show the exact error message that you get.

Almost; in fact, I like to first have all the items appear, then all the descriptions. And I might want a finer-grained control in any case. But the \mbox{} does the trick to solve the problem.

@StephanLehmke I'm leaning toward the polygon-solution now, just considering if I should ask a new question or adapt the current one; I'm having some problems figuring this out. See also: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/2514/…

Actually, this is the best possible with discretely changing line-widths. I don't think it's theoretically possible to avoid the problem of the joins. I realise now that I need continuous changing line-widths, and probably the polygon suggested by @StephanLemke would be the way to go. A little meta-question: since this actually changes my question, should I post a new question (identical except line-width changes continuously) or adapt the current question, which would mean Jake's reply doesn't answer it anymore?

No, that wouldn't quite do it. But it'd be close. I realised that I was wrong when I said the line-width should vary discretely, because then there will inevitably be discontinuous joins...

Or maybe my drawing a circle at each data point with a radius corresponding to the local line thickness, and then filling the area between each pair of circles...
