comment What to do to switch to biblatex?
From the manual: For a quick start guide, browse §§ 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.3, 3.6, 3.7, 3.11.. That's still almost 90 pages.

comment Is there any opposite of newpage?
Great answer, that must be the reason why we need to run latex/pdflatex 2 or more times as well?

comment Draw a grid for obtaining coordinates to pass to includegraphics' viewport option
Looks like I was missing the abs option (I think it wasn't there in an earlier revision), but that one's pretty essential. Got it now!

comment Draw a grid for obtaining coordinates to pass to includegraphics' viewport option
I find it hard to reproduce it with my local example here. I might be still doing something wrong. Does it make a difference in what format the picture is?

comment Draw a grid for obtaining coordinates to pass to includegraphics' viewport option
Perhaps I did not phrase my question clearly. The coordinates in this figure do not correspond to the coordinates I need to pass to viewport to get my desired subset of the image; for example, suppose I want to include only the right eye. \includegraphics[viewport=39 60 44 64,clip]{tiger} does not give me the right eye, but a different (much smaller) area.

I'm not sure if I'm understood correctly, I will edit the question.

comment Drawing on multiple images inside the same tikzpicture, how to get the right transformation of coordinates?
@PeterGrill The final output is supposed to be an environment where I can draw on either picture using local coordinates scaled so that (0, 0) is the lower left and (1, 1) is the upper right, as works for a single pictures in the linked question.

comment Drawing on multiple images inside the same tikzpicture, how to get the right transformation of coordinates?
Ah, it looks like it works if I additionally change x={(image2.south east)},... to x={(image1.south east)},.... Does that work because the images are equally sized? They are in my present example. I haven't tested with differently sized pictures.

@percusse That solves it partially; it moves the origin appropriately, but (1, 1) does not yet refer to the upper right (it's still stretched).

@KonradRudolph Any chance your CV without any template turns into a nice successor class for the community to use? ;)

comment \includepdfmerge starting new documents on right side page
@AndrewSwann That's what I ended up doing in practice (it was small enough to do by hand), question is if I can do that in LaTeX by passing appropriate commands.

comment Underline different authors in the bibliography by hacking BST file
Note that underlining is not a very nice typographical style; we might use it in hand-written text because we can't do bold or italic, but you might want to try other styles (e.g. italic) and see if they look better than underlining.

+1 for the triskaidephobia tag, that unfortunately might not survive automatic purges of single-use tags.

comment generate simple cylindrical shape with text in latex (tikz)
Could you describe more specifically what exactly your question is? As it stands now, it looks a bit like a "please solve my problem" question unlikely to be helpful to future visitors. If you continue working through the manual, you will find out how to draw a diagram like this one (it's not very complicated).

Excellent answer. Maybe you could submit it as a patch to tikz? Should be quite useful! BTW, also illustrates why one normally shouldn't touch the default arrowhead sizes... (-;

Well, see my 'P.S'; you can still use a hybrid solution, for example, you could create the complicated parts with external software, but write the text labels with tikz
