comment Good practice on spacing
@NieldeBeaudrap: Both work, but I prefer the empty brackets because you can just use it consistently, rather than only adding the \ when a space follows. With cleveref, make sure that you load hyperref and cleveref last, and they should play nicely.

comment Double space between sentences.
I don't think using that specific example paragraph is helpful. You could just as easily craft an paragraph which looks slightly worse with \nonfrenchspacing and slightly better with \frenchspacing.

Better to use cleveref than Figure~\ref{...} – what if you change your mind and want fig. later?

comment What is XeTeX exactly and why should I use it?
"ligatures such as old style figures"… text figures and ligatures are different things, no?

Should you not be using \and rather than commas to separate the authors?

@squidbear: I would write with lowercase and periods: a.m. and p.m. Why should they be (small)capitalized when none of the other latin abbreviations are?

comment Oldstyle numerals or lining numerals with units of measurement?
This is exactly what I had decided to do, I'm glad someone else thinks the same way.

comment How can I place a one-column-abstract in a two-column document?
His added environment seems to be necessary if you want both the title and the abstract in there.
