comment Automatically capitalise the first word in each sentence
If you happen to go with one of the answers provided in @Ailurus's link. Please go with the one that uses a script to change the input before compiling and not with the one that make the period active. That has the potential to break all kinds of stuff. Really, \tikz\node at (0.5,0.5) {please don't};.

comment How/where to test my template document?
You can of course install tex packages locally on your faculty linux server. Every user has a local texmf tree, you can install etoolbox there and it will work fine.

comment small cap i for 1
You could replace every 1 by a smallcaps i by making it active. For instance \catcode`1\active\def1{\textsc{i}} would do that. This could cause issues though, if some packages uses a 1 in a command sequence or something like that. So you have to consider that.

comment Nice-looking $x_i^j$
If you use \smash{j} instead of j TeX will think it has zero height and (more importantly) zero depth and it will look more like the version with the 1.

comment Change make contact graphic in TikZ circuit lib and add closed option
@student: I hadn't tested it completely (hardly at all actually) and the changed anchor slipped my mind. The updated code should work as expected.

Is the image (the clock in this case) also TikZ-generated? Or is that an external image you are including?
