comment How do I make figure captions span multiple pages?
Good to make sure stuff works for that environment. It is very a common one to use!

comment how can I create the negation of mathcal letters
The first one looks really nice. It's probably worth just not using T.

@barbarabeeton \pmb is great for my purposes (which has nothing to do with mathematics) thanks.

@DavidCarlisle \varnothing really is the most appropriate symbol, I'm quite happy with using \phi but I thought I would ask.

@JukkaK.Korpela The "why?" is very complicated, but let me assure you that I am aware of the stylistic and formal conventions of the fields to which my work belongs.

Excellent, but has uncovered a bug in my syntax highlighting, very annoying.

comment Creating reference for command
That was a very reasonable thing to think. I was something more like veryverylongnamethatIdontwanttotypeoverandoveragain so I just called it X. I thought it would be very odd for latex to look for a reference for something defined by \the<countername>, seems once again, that latex is just very very strange.
