I am a førsteamenuensis (UK: lecturer, US: assistant/associate professor) in the Department of Mathematics at the Norwegian University for Science and Technology. I work in both differential and algebraic topology, both of which require that I use some category theory from time to time. I am also extremely interested in how best to use technology to help us do mathematics, particularly in the purer ends of mathematics where the obvious computational uses are not so useful.

When posting code, please also specify any particular packages or (as in this case) tikz libraries. The \documentclass{beamer} \usepackage{tikz} was guessable, but I had to dig to figure out which tikzlibraries you were loading. Thanks!

@Heinzi: that's what merges are for. You merge the changes from one branch into the other branch. Then it puts in the relative changes but doesn't affect that branch's special changes.

revised Take 2: How do automatic overlay specifications work in Beamer (in a nested situation)
Added something relevant to the updated part of the question

@Yossi: To do what you say, the \only command would have to examine its contents for any + s inside. At the moment, it just chucks away its argument and that is extremely useful. With the current implementation, you could do what you said manually by something like \alt<+-(3)>{\alert<+>{foo}}{\only<+>{}} but to get the current behaviour with your proposal would be much trickier, I think.

@Matthew: Yes and good suggestion. I've modified it to do that.

comment What is the difference between \def and \newcommand?
@SamB: looking at the man page, probably. Although in connection with "brains", the word "upgrade" makes me think of Cybermen. As I live in the same country as Bad Wolf Bay, I like to steer clear of such things as much as possible.

comment TikZ: Cropping the Bounding Box
Could you post an example of the output of the graphing program (one that's got the extra whitespace) please? That would help us figure out what's putting the space there.

Tsk, tsk: you forgot to indent all your code. More seriously, I must look up \action; I've no idea what that does.
