I am a førsteamenuensis (UK: lecturer, US: assistant/associate professor) in the Department of Mathematics at the Norwegian University for Science and Technology. I work in both differential and algebraic topology, both of which require that I use some category theory from time to time. I am also extremely interested in how best to use technology to help us do mathematics, particularly in the purer ends of mathematics where the obvious computational uses are not so useful.

comment How to combine Hobby paths with PGF Basic Layer commands?
Looking at the PGF code, I found where it stores the last coordinate on the path. I've just updated the code at launchpad to use that. So that should obviate the need to tell it the initial point. Please test! And if you have other ideas for the basic layer interface, let me know.

Actually, all you need to do is \pgfpoint{1cm}{1cm}.

Yes, that's probably the best. How about an option to override the current method. So if nothing is specified then it uses the last \pgf@x and \pgf@y.

Re latest edit. Ah. That's because the hobby algorithm needs to know the initial point. It tries to guess it as the previous \pgf@x and \pgf@y but clearly this isn't working in this case. Not sure what the best thing is to do in this case.

@ChrisH I guess it depends on the projector. I did this in lectures where I was using the same projector each time and so could use feedback to figure out the right colour scheme.

@ClaudioFiandrino Then it's my "oops" for not making that clearer in the documentation.

Hi, I only just found this question. What would you like hobby to do? It should be possible to provide a "low level" path generated using Hobby's algorithm. Can you provide an example of what the output should be? That is, can you add an example of the path construction you use that includes an honest bezier curve. I should be able to figure out the syntax for hobby from that.

I use the externalisation feature of TikZ to ensure that a journal (or the arXiv) can use any pictures that I create. If you do use hobby to generate a picture for your paper, send me a link to the paper!

By the way, pml3array ("Poor Man's LaTeX3 Array") is one of the files installed by the hobby package.

Your bounty makes it look as though you don't yet have a satisfactory answer, yet you've accepted an answer making it seem that there's nothing more to be done on this question. Which is it?
