comment What's the difference between format and macro language?
Thanks! So Tex is an language interpreter, coupled to an engine. Is an engine an interpreter, compiler or something else? What is the counterpart to an engine for Tex in a programming language?

comment What's the difference between format and macro language?
"A format in a TeX context is a language built using TeX (typically by dumping a collection of ready-defined macros and other definitions into a packaged binary)." I wonder if by "built" and "dumping", you meant "compiled" and "compiling"? By "a packaged binary", do you mean the executable of an engine?

@MartinSchröder: "pdflatex is not an engine". What is it then?

comment Is pdflatex an engine or a format?
Thanks! (1) Does "some macros being dumped by some engine" mean the macros being pre-compiled by the engine? (2) "In comments I listed all the "latex" formats that got installed by default in my texlive 2012 installation." "LaTex" is a format itself, so are "PlainTeX" and "ConTeXt". So what does "'latex' formats" mean?

IanThompson and @Alan: I mean the pdflatex in my second quote. so I think your comments misunderstood me.

comment The differences between TeX engines
Thanks! "the base Tex engine" is the engine for "Tex", the most primitive format. "Knuth's TeX ('TeX-82')" is the engine for "plain Tex", the superset format of "Tex". So Knuth's TeX ('TeX-82') and "the base Tex engine" are different concepts?

comment The differences between TeX engines
Joseph, I wonder if Knuth's TeX ('TeX-82') and "the base Tex engine" are the same concept? If not, is Knuth's TeX ('TeX-82') an engine for plain Tex? (If I am correct, Tex and plain Tex are different concepts, the latter is a superset of the former?)

@Werner: Thanks! (1) What do you mean by “packages up into a bundle“? (2) Is LaTex a (Marco) package of Tex?
