comment Right angle symbols at corners of each page
I think the original pdfcrop removes more margins than specified. Not sure why.

My measurements of those right angle symbols show that I have to trim according to '-36 -59 -49 -35' (L,T, R, B). How did you get your measurements "54 36 54 36"? Or how shall I get the correct measurement for trimming?

comment What are the possible dimensions / sizes / units LaTeX understands?
Wikipdia says 1 point = 1/72 inch, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_%28typography%29. What is the difference and relation between point and big point?

(1) Does pdfcrop have bugs? Or did I use it incorrectly? (2) Your measure is "54 36 54 36", and mine is '-36 -59 -49 -35'. Not taking into account the sign, they are different, are they?

Thanks. My measurement show that I need to change -36 -59 -49 -35 from left, top, right and bottom margins. I run my pdfcrop command pdfcrop --margins '-36 -59 -49 -35' tmp.pdf tmpo3.pdf, where my pdfcrop is PDFCROP 1.20, 2009/10/06 - Copyright (c) 2002-2009 by Heiko Oberdiek, the result doesn't seem right.

comment pdfcrop and --bbox command line option
Wikipdia says 1 point = 1/72 inch, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_%28typography%29. What is the difference and relation between point and big point? Does "pt" in TeX not mean "point" in Wikipedia?

@DG' When using pdfcrop, how can I determine the measurements of the margins to crop away?

@Verron: How does some math software "make things even more complicated"? I would like to make things more convenient and productive.

comment What are texlive-fonts-extra and texlive-latex-extra-doc used for?
Thanks. Are all packages with doc in their names not necessary? When I need to figure out how to use Latex, I always consult the internet, so can I safely remove all "doc" packages?

comment How to spot errors reported by pdflatex?
@cfr: (1) I didn't set up nonstop mode, unless it is the default, which i don't know how to find out. (2) Lots of terminal outputs already gone out of the scroll-able range, and I don't understand almost all of it, so I don't know if it reports some error. But in the log file, there is no word "error". (3) Is the log file supposed to be the same as the output on the terminal?

I searched in the log file, no "error" is there. There is one "warning" but saying something I guess probably not relevant.

comment How to compile a tex file so that some portion can be optionally not compiled?
Thanks, do you know the examples for the last method? Alternatively, can we choose to or not to compile a portion of code by specifying only to pdflatex without touching the code again?
