My requirement is simple + not waste space + standard. I don't like Elsevier itself, because it is not free, but I don't know what other latex templates also look good for writing report etc

thanks. btw, I try to add the date to the article. Do you know how to do that? I add \date{May 20, 2015} before or after \author, but the date doesn't show.

no. it is not for publish. It is just for myself, and I think elsevier's template looks good.

thanks. \section*{References} doesn't make References appear in the outline/bookmark of the resulting pdf. Can I make it appear? Or which alternative to elsarticle can work?

Hi @diabonas: I followed your method using pax, but it doesn't work in my example tex.stackexchange.com/questions/243855/…. Am I missing something? For example, you can combine an arbitrary pdf, and a pdf generated from orion.lcg.ufrj.br/Dr.Dobbs/books/book9/mf1210.htm, which contains internal links.
