comment What are texlive-fonts-extra and texlive-latex-extra-doc used for?
Thanks. Are all packages with doc in their names not necessary? When I need to figure out how to use Latex, I always consult the internet, so can I safely remove all "doc" packages?

comment How to spot errors reported by pdflatex?
@cfr: (1) I didn't set up nonstop mode, unless it is the default, which i don't know how to find out. (2) Lots of terminal outputs already gone out of the scroll-able range, and I don't understand almost all of it, so I don't know if it reports some error. But in the log file, there is no word "error". (3) Is the log file supposed to be the same as the output on the terminal?

I searched in the log file, no "error" is there. There is one "warning" but saying something I guess probably not relevant.

comment How to compile a tex file so that some portion can be optionally not compiled?
Thanks, do you know the examples for the last method? Alternatively, can we choose to or not to compile a portion of code by specifying only to pdflatex without touching the code again?

Thanks! I added the code, but it doesn't look good. Especially on the first page, there was already my name on top, and you code added another name there. The template code can be downloaded from the link I gave, if you are willing to try.

@AndrewStacey: Thanks! This is not used for any formal conference or seminar. It is just a makeshift when time is limited for preparation, or just don't want to spend much time.

Thanks! I realized two problems. (1) For slides, there is no section environment. What do you recommend to replace it and used as some subtitles? Or is there some common environment that can be shared between slidesand article? (2) An equation within $$ ... $$ that is too long for a single line cannot be automatically continue at the next line but disappear at the right end, even without landscape. (3) With landscape, a long line of text cannot automatically continue at the next line.

"there are more contents in each slide and not fancy at all" compare to beamer.

comment Can TeX/LaTeX create fillable forms in a scanned pdf?
@GonzaloMedina: (1) eforms is not in TeX Live, does it mean I will download it to somewhere that TeX can find? (2) The question you point to is for creating forms while creating the pdf, while my pdf is a scanned one already. So I wonder how that can be done?
