@JosephWright Thanks so much for your timely help. I removed the older MikTeX installation, and now all works well. Points to you if you want to put it all together in an answer.

@JosephWright It had completely slipped my mind that I had two separate installations of MikTeX. I am in the process of updating both, cleaning up the paths, and will report back to this thread.

@JosephWright I have updated MikTeX in normal and admin modes, and here is the current log: gist.github.com/fgnu/071669d7974eb0dbc49b. The output is still deformed and XeLaTeX tells me there are 43 errors.
