comment Document class for designing a book
I am using Tufte for one project (a textbook for a laboratory-oriented course, in which large margins are useful) and Springer for another (a conventional book). Although I have little idea what the original question was aimed at, I can say that (a) both these classes work well in practice. Then again, I think the default latex book class is reasonably good. I'm not sure what the problem is, but there are many good solutions already stated on this discussion thread.
