comment Italicizing emphatic speech: Italic or upright quotation marks?
@JosephWright: Fair enough; could you migrate it to Graphic Design please?

comment XeLaTeX and microtype protusion problems at hyphens
It's actually pretty hard to produce a small example. The problem seems to be tied to using certain fonts, it goes away when I omit the font selection. I'll keep trying.

comment Italicizing emphatic speech: Italic or upright quotation marks?
@KonradRudolph: I just discovered that microtype and xelatex have moved on since I last checked. Maybe someone should post the requisite version on this question. The editing is at least somewhat uniform (e.g. small caps, a.m./p.m. styling, quotation marks), though I haven't looked in great detail; personally, I would like to apply much heavier pruning shears to all the dashes, ellipses and hyperemphases, but... one thing at a time, I suppose. The legal situation is unclear to me, too.

@KonradRudolph: Ah, the tex source is indeed available online! And rather well edited, it seems.

comment Italicizing emphatic speech: Italic or upright quotation marks?
@KonradRudolph: Actually, I misremembered. The existing PDF actually looks pretty decent. And seems to handle the quotation marks consistently. Thanks.

comment Italicizing emphatic speech: Italic or upright quotation marks?
@KonradRudolph: I'm only aware of one (the one linked on the page), and it looks awful. I could settle for a high-quality online version (a quality like these online Lovecraft texts), or TeX source, but until such effort is authorized by the creator, it's back to XSLT and sed for me.

comment Italicizing emphatic speech: Italic or upright quotation marks?
@Qrrbrbirlbel: The font I have works really well either way, so that's not a problem. Doesn't Bringhurst even say that it makes no sense to italicize punctuators? He strongly argued to always use upright parentheses, for example, so the same could probably be said of quotation marks...

comment Control interword glue
OK, cool, thanks. I only needed a handful of interventions to get rid of the last overful lines, and sometimes I even managed to trade an awkward hyphenation for a slightly bigger interword spacing, and it definitely looks better. Thanks!

Suppose my document is finished and all fine, with the exception of a few of such rogue long lines. Would it be better to only change the spacing for each offending paragraph, or would I get the same result if I set the emergencystretch to something loose globally?

comment Control interword glue
@NilsL: Sorry, isn't my own text, and I have to reproduce it faithfully! (And more generous spacing works great, and is hardly noticeable at all. The biggest problem is XeTeX's lack of microtype, I think.)

comment How to prevent a page break between paragraphs
@barbarabeeton: I had a look at this, and while the package looks very powerful (e.g. place epigraphs on "part" pages), it does exactly the opposite of the two things I care about: It does not unindent the subsequent text body, and it does not allow page breaks in the middle of the epigraph body (since it puts the entire thing in a minipage).
