comment Space Above Equations
Hi, the space comes from the authoring tool, before tex is generated, I dont have much control over that. If I remove emtpy lines around equations manually in tex file, yes output looks good. Is there any way to achieve that result without removing empty lines? Thanks.

comment Redefining \verb to be \url
I could not find a way to make Emacs highlight \url the way \verb is highlighted, so I fixed it on the Latex side. It is a hack, big time, but it works now.

comment Amsmath, spacing, left alignment
No this wont work. I want to use \[ \] exactly the way I've shown you. These extra {gather*} statements are clouding up the text.

That worked -- with one downside, inclusion of amsmath messed up the spacing I worked hard to get right. Example tex file and pdf is here goo.gl/HYr5F . After I included amsmath topmargin spacing was ignored for some reason. My settings makes everything left aligned, no paragraph spacing, same single line vertical space between equations, paragraphs.

@egreg i figured as much.. here is what I need tho: I want to use \[ \] for all my equations. If I place a label in a \[ \], I want it to start showing numbers. is this possible?
