comment TikZ, PGFPlots, or GNUplot: plotting a curve without the known function
This looks like the response of a controller, e.g. a PID controller.

I'm using LuaLaTeX, and it works for what I wanted it to do. I'll add my usecase to the question.

The previous answer (now deleted?) worked for me, so I'm good. I can still add the wanted information if you think this may be useful for someone else.

comment How do I write a script (in Windows) that removes all the temporary LaTeX files in Vim?
If you are using a build system (see this question ), most of them have a command to clean the temporary files. Mapping this to a vim shortcut shouldn't be too difficult.

comment Generate a Hinton diagram using pgfplots
You can use the pgf backend of matplotlib and export the diagram to pgf code, which you can then \input into your latex document. Would that be acceptable?

comment Vim-latex key expansion doesn't remove the typed keys
From what I read here, vim-latex often seems to create more problems then it solves. There are numerous other plugins which perform all sorts of things, but for snippets I suggest looking at snipmate, and a suitable snippet file for TeX can be found here. They are also very easy to adapt to your needs.
