I'm a post-doctoral fellow in community ecology, and have been using LaTeX since the earlier days of my Masters.

comment kpfonts and Computer modern
It's always better not to mix fonts in the text body. If you type a variable name or inline formula, it will definitely look awkward. May I ask why you want two different fonts?

comment Short titles, Journal abbreviations, etc. in biblatex
I've never done it myself, but probably have a look at the section 4.3, page 151 of the biblatex documentation.

comment Common bib file for several collaborators
Thanks! The linked paper is especially useful, though I tend to use Git rather then SVN.

comment Does anyone have suggestions on a workflow for correcting bugs in Mendeley's automatically generated citations?
I used a Perl script with the most common mistakes for my doctoral dissertation, helped me a great deal. Though in the long term, it is better to just fix the references in Mendeley. Supposedly, future releases of the desktop program will increase bibtex export.

comment MacTeX 2011, Xetex and Tex Live Utility
I ran into the same problem, and despite tlmgr not finding any updates available, the problem persists. Exact same causes, same error messages... The problem seems to be with sparse, which the tex live utility tells me is up to date

comment Citing the initials of one author and the full names of other authors
This should easily be done with biblatex, which is easier to customize due to its use of LaTeX macros rather than the awkward bibtex language.
