Overflowing gutter

How can I prevent the title from overflowing the gutter? It seems to only overflow by the amount of space introduced by the numbered part of the title. We are using this style: http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/acm_proc_article-sp.cls

Using the cls referenced above, the example below will produce the issue. (thanks to @Werner for requesting an example).

   \documentclass{acm_proc_article-sp}

   \begin{document}

   \section{Introduction with many more computational and other words}

    Could you create a minimal working example (MWE) that replicates the problem? Since you're using a publication-style class, are you limited in terms of the package you can use?

  • edited the document to add a short example (had to be long enough to make the second column visible).

    Insert \sloppy inside \section: \section{\sloppy Introduction...} Commented Jan 15, 2014 at 18:30
  • @karlkoeller's suggestion works (adding \sloppy). maybe if they "answer" i can assign credit?

I would patch \section to use a \raggedright formatting of sectional units:

enter image description here

\documentclass{acm_proc_article-sp}% http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/acm_proc_article-sp.cls
\usepackage{lipsum}% http://ctan.org/pkg/lipsum
\usepackage{etoolbox}% http://ctan.org/pkg/etoolbox
\patchcmd{\section}% <cmd>
  {\secfnt}% <search>
  {\raggedright\secfnt}% <replace>
  {}{}% <success><failure>
\begin{document}

\section{Introduction with many more computational and other words}

\lipsum[1-5]

\section{Instructional interaction design in support of computational thinking}

\lipsum[6-9]

\balancecolumns
% That's all folks!
\end{document}

You can use \sloppy inside your \sections to make LaTeX less "fussy" about line breaking.

MWE

\documentclass{acm_proc_article-sp}

\usepackage{lipsum} % just for the example

\begin{document}

\section{\sloppy Introduction with many more computational and other words}

\lipsum[1-5]

\section{\sloppy Instructional interaction design in support of computational thinking}

\lipsum[6-9]

\balancecolumns
% That's all folks!
\end{document}

Output

  • ugly. (sorry.) ragged right is a better approach. Commented Jan 15, 2014 at 19:10
  • @barbarabeeton Indeed it looks not so well, but we don't know whether a ragged right solution is accepted... Commented Jan 15, 2014 at 19:25
