# Authors and affiliations

\documentclass[authoryear]{elsarticle}
\begin{document}
\begin{frontmatter}
\title{A Very Clever Paper Title}

In the above case, how to merge affiliations for Author2 and Author3 if they are same....

• Spaces after the comma in the optional argument of \author are not supported by class elsarticle. ☹
• Also the class does not generate a rerun warning, the letters for the affiliations are not yet known in the first LaTeX run.

## A. Example without merging

\documentclass[authoryear]{elsarticle}
\begin{document}
\begin{frontmatter}
\title{A Very Clever Paper Title}

\end{frontmatter}
\end{document}

## B. Two affiliations in one line

\author[add1]{Author1}

• Disadvantage: The second affiliation in the line gets lost visually. It is not clear, that the both authors have two affiliations.

## C. Affiliations in two lines

\author[add1]{Author1}

\begin{tabular}[t]{@{}l@{}}
Centre for Study of Things\\
Department of Interests
\end{tabular}%
}

• Disadvantage: IMHO better than the previous variant, but it is not clear at the first glance that there are two affiliations under "b" and that both authors have two affiliations.

Summary: I prefer the first version A, clear and simple.

• Thanks @Heiko Oberdiek for very helpful answer. I do a have a similar question here. Would highly appreciate if you have a look on this and provide any answer. Thanks – MYaseen208 Apr 15 '16 at 16:20

Here is an easy solution with \usepackage{authblk}, which mark each affiliation with either number or any symbol you assign to it. Below is the example

\usepackage{authblk}

\begin{document}

\title{Multiple Affiliation for Multiple Author}
\date{}

\author[1, 2]{\small Erwin T. Lau}
\author[3, 5]{\small Massimo Gaspari}
\author[1, 2, 4]{\small Daisuke Nagai}
\author[1, 2, 4]{\small Paolo Coppi}

\affil[1]{\footnotesize Department of Physics, Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520, USA}
\affil[2]{\footnotesize Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520, USA}
\affil[3]{\footnotesize Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, 4 Ivy Lane, Princeton, NJ 08544-1001 USA}
\affil[4]{\footnotesize Department of Astronomy, Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520, USA}
\affil[5]{\footnotesize Einstein and Spitzer Fellow}

The output is

I used author and affiliation information in arXiv to demonstrate.

• Can we use authblk in elsevier (elsarticle) class? – Mishra S Sep 27 '18 at 15:03
• @SibaMishra Surely you can! But you need to be careful with the spacing as it seems to me that the space for author is pretty limited in elsevier document. – zyy Sep 28 '18 at 16:20
