Recently I spotted that applying the option dashed or dotted to a plot results in having ugly / distorted marks or marks with dots (when applying dotted) around them.

Here is a MWE:

Which will result in this:

Depending on the pdf-viewer this 'ugliness' can be seen with pretty low zooming level (the internal TeXworks viewer makes it especially worse).

Anyhow, about the 'duplicate' thing percusse wrote - yes, you're right that it leads to the same solution but I've searched stackexchange and google for this issue and couldn't find anything useful. So one should consider changing the title of the other question to something like "ugly/bad looking marks" (or add some keywords) since for finding that answer one has already to know what causes the problem, i.e. the marks not being solid. Since I had no clue where this problem comes from I used the above mentioned (key-)words :)

The problem is that the options dashed or dotted (as well as others like dashdotted) are passed to the paths defining the markers.

You may want to restore the usual behavior setting option solid to the markers:

mark options={solid,...}

An example:

If you are going to apply it to all your plots you could also define this in the options of the axis environment, so you would only have to type it once:

\begin{axis}[mark options={solid,...},...]
...
\end{axis}

If all markers should be drawn solid and scaled by 2 you can set the mark options key as an option for the whole picture or the whole axis:
