I use LaTeX to generate contracts and agreements. In most cases, it works okay but, every so often, it causes problems with pagination; specifically, if I have too many subsections without an explicit \newpage.

This is an issue because, every time I edit or add a subsection I end up having to manually repaginate the entire document which sort of defeats the object of using Latex.

There's nothing particularly fancy about the following LaTeX definition but, if you compile it, you'll notice two problems:

  1. There's a completely unnecessary page break after "In this Agreement, unless clearly inconsistent with or otherwise indicated by the context :"

  2. There's an overfull \vbox at (plus or minus) subsection 3.26 and, without a manual \newpage, I can't stop it "eating" the rest of the document

I've tried messing around with the widow/orphan control and pageatnewline in the titlesec parameter but nothing seems to stop the compiler from putting everything on one page.

All I'm after really is automated section numbering and automated references/labels. Maybe there's a better way to do this without having to write my own formatter.

However, for the moment, I'd just like to know how to make the compiler put a page break in if a section header goes over the end of a page.

Don't you think that semantically, your subsections look like items in a list? I propose this solution, with enumitem, in which enumerate mimicks more or less (it's up to you to tell) your subsections. It allows easy page breaks and, adding labels, you still can cross-reference items.

  • I was thinking about this and as @Bernard right says, the problem is semanticbecause you are using the class article that is not suited for generate contracts and agreements. Of course you can adapt a class to fit at your needs. In this case the main error is a bad choice of the structure you use. You must to think about what you need and how to get it right in LaTeX. Sometimes I have exactly the same problem with some documents, but it happens only in the first stage when I'm deciding the structure I'll use. So I solve it temporary with manual repagination. – Aradnix Aug 20 '14 at 23:17
  • So perhaps the enumitem package could be a good choice for you. I was thinking about another options such as use the enumerateenvironment and inside the \item[] where you could adjust the numeration but won't be so automatic as you wish. – Aradnix Aug 20 '14 at 23:33
  • @Aradnix: I suppose you're speaking of the enumerate package? Enumitem has the same possibilities, and much more. In particular you can set the list parameters in preamble. – Bernard Aug 21 '14 at 0:13
  • No, I thought first in the enumerate environment as I said, later I saw it could be so automatic and customizable as the enumitem package you recommend. – Aradnix Aug 21 '14 at 0:27

Wow, that's fantastic.

Thanks so much for your help - I hadn't realised the enumitem package was so powerful. I tried it some time ago and it kept screwing up the numbering because I was trying to prepend the section number rather than using its internal counters (doh!)

I've taken the liberty of posting my final version here in case anyone else finds this particular legal format handy:
