Consider the following MWE. As can be seen, the option useeditor=true is ignored for the @incollection entry, and it is in fact treated equally with useeditor=false. Why? And how can I make it care about it?

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[style = authoryear-comp]{biblatex}
\usepackage{filecontents}
\begin{filecontents}{\jobname.bib}
@INCOLLECTION{beatles1970a,
    BOOKTITLE = "Let it be (a)",
    EDITOR = "The Beatles",
    TITLE = "Maggie Mae",
    YEAR = "1970",
    PAGES = "17--18",
    OPTIONS = "useeditor=true"}
@BOOK{beatles1970b,
    TITLE = "Let it be (b)",
    EDITOR = "The Beatles",
    YEAR = "1970",
    OPTIONS = "useeditor=true"}
\end{filecontents}
\addbibresource{\jobname.bib}
\begin{document}
\nocite{*}
\printbibliography
\end{document}

  • In @incollection "editor" refers to the booktitle, so imho it wouldn't be correct to use it in the label of the unit. You can naturally change this. Dec 10, 2014 at 18:57
  • @UlrikeFischer Yes, I am aware of this conundrum. I was thinking of opening a separate question about what to do when a paper in a book doesn't have an author, but an editor. It doesn't seem as if biblatex supports this scenario out of the box, since editor always refers to the book editor in such cases.

    @incollection is a "self-contained unit with a distinct author", use @inbook instead if you don't have an author. Dec 10, 2014 at 19:25
  • @UlrikeFischer If @inbook relates to @book like @incollection relates to @collection (cf. the manual under 2.3.1), then this is not appropriate, since the book in question doesn't have any author(s). @book is a "single-volume book with one or more authors where the authors share credit for the work as a whole".

  • What exactly is the role of the 'editor'? That is, usually an editor has to have something to edit. Sometimes that is written by an author. What is the editor editing in this case?

In the comments it has been discussed that editor, translator and friends for @in works refer to the enclosing booktitle and not to title.

We can create new names that refer to the editor, translator, ... of the title, we will call them ineditor, intranslator, ...

First we need a .dbx file with the new data mode. Then we just need to copy all the macros for editor, translator to ineditor, intranslator. In our MWE we then only need

\renewbibmacro*{author/translator+others}{\usebibmacro{author/ineditor+others/intranslator+others}} %% this is an ad hoc for this particular application

and are good to go

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{filecontents}
\usepackage{xpatch}
\begin{filecontents}{innames.dbx}

Maybe you find the opposite approach more logical (especially seeing that the bookauthor is the author of the booktitle), so we can also pretend the editor, translator, ... fields refer to the title and come up with new bookeditor, booktranslator, ... for the booktitle work. This approach is strictly speaking incompatible with the standard data model.

The .dbx file is slightly different and most name macros are renamed to by.... For the MWE we then only need

\renewbibmacro*{author/translator+others}{\usebibmacro{author/editor+others/translator+others}} %% this is an ad hoc for this particular application

\xpatchbibdriver{inbook}
