# eledmac: facing pages with glossed text using covington.sty

What I'm trying to do:

I am attempting to create a document using eledmac/eledpar with facing pages. The left page contains a glossed text using covington.sty and the right page contains a prose translation.

Because each line of glossed text takes the space of two lines of text, the right text doesn't line up.

What I'd ideally like:

.……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
| | |
| Left Page | Right Page |
| | |
| 1 foreign words here | running translation goes 1R |
| glossed words here | here and continues etc. 2R |
| 2 more foreign text | |
| more glossed text | |
| 3 next chunk of text | running translation of 3R |
| next gloss of text | next chunk here. 4R |
| | |
= = =

(Because it may be impossible to get eledpar to add extra lines on the right without tricking it to think they're there on the left!)

I have tried to add some of line printing/processing macros from eledpar into my convenience macro \mll but they don't seem to have any effect.

What should I be doing?

• The interlinear glossing package expex allows you to have a free translation panel on the side (see section 12.2 in the documentation and Lining up free translation in interlinear glossing with expex). You could put each chunk within its own gloss environment and the line breaking on both sides would work as you desire. I'm not familiar with eledmac/eledpar, so I don't know how to integrate this with splitting the two panels onto facing pages. Jan 2 '15 at 15:06
• Also, in general I would recommend using a glossing package other than covington, which is quite old and has some known problems. See Alan Munn's excellent answer to Numbered examples in linguistics that I can refer back to for pros/cons of gb4e, linguex, and expex. Since you are looking for glossing outside of numbered examples, take a look at Unnumbered linguistic examples with glosses. Jan 2 '15 at 15:21
