I'm referring to this answer from @Jake to replace the string --- of an input csv to \textemdash in a pgfplotstable table with the S column of siunitx. The provided solution works fine when pdflatex is used. However, using lualatex with the additional package fontspec will produce a lot of these errors:

Missing number, treated as zero.

I would like to get it to work for lualatex as well. Any ideas?

MWE:

\documentclass{memoir}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage{pgfplotstable}
\usepackage{siunitx}
\usepackage{longtable}

\pgfplotstableset{
    begin table=\begin{longtable},
    end table=\end{longtable},
}

\begin{document}

You can use the "real" char

string replace={---}{—}, %

\textemdash works if you make it robust:

\usepackage{etoolbox}
\robustify\textemdash
