I recently installed MiKTeX on my laptop, and when I try to typeset some of my (old) TeX files, all my references show as [?] in the pdf.

I get the following error message from the console:

Sorry, but "C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\texify.exe" did not succeed.

The log file says:

Below is what I've tried so far:

  1. Updated all the updateable packages in Update MiKTeX (Admin)
  2. Made sure that all the packages starting with miktex were installed in MiKTeX Package Manager (Admin)
  3. Refreshed the FNDB and updated all format files in MiKTeX Option (Admin)
  4. Compiled .tex file in command line, then tried again in MiKTeX, error is still there.

Thanks in advance for any tips on how to fix this!

UPDATE -- For the record I kept doing the above, and I'm not sure how but at some point it solved my problem... mystery.

  • Can you compile a basic file (‘Hello world!)? – Bernard Feb 13 '16 at 18:39

Compile at first without texify. Use pdflatex and bibtex on the command line to get better error messages. – Ulrike Fischer Feb 13 '16 at 18:42
  • @Bernard This example below compiles without error: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} Hello World \end{document} – tfh Feb 13 '16 at 19:19
  • Maybe there's a problem with the packages loaded in your preamble. These times I had problems with the package on-the-fly installer. Try to compile from the command line if you didn't install the whole distribution. – Bernard Feb 13 '16 at 19:30
  • @UlrikeFischer Not sure if I fully understand what you are suggesting (not an expert user here) but pdflatex myfile in cmd compiles the pdf without error (i.e. my reference numbers show up correctly in the pdf), and bibtex myfile does not return any error in cmd. Is that what you meant? – tfh Feb 13 '16 at 19:40
