How can I avoid orphan headings using class moderncv?

The problem with class moderncv is that it does not provide all functions you know from classes like article etc.

One of this things is that there is no automatic way to resolve orphan headings.

That the reason you have to do it by your own by adding \newpage or better \clearpage before the heading you want to have on the next page of your cv ...

with the following code (see marking <========== for added code):

\documentclass[11pt,a4paper,sans]{moderncv}
\moderncvstyle{casual}
\moderncvcolor{blue}
\usepackage[scale=0.75]{geometry}

\name{John}{Doe}
\title{Curriculum}

I get the wished result:

You can a) increase the penalties for page or paragraph breaking. However, this might not work like you intended. Option b) would be to set manual pagebreaks

a) add

\clubpenalty = 10000
\widowpenalty = 10000
\displaywidowpenalty = 10000

to your document in the preamble. To review the current settings for the penalties use

\typeout{Current Penalies:^^J
\string\clubpenalty=\the\clubpenalty^^J
\string\widowpenalty=\the\widowpenalty^^J
\string\displaywidowpenalty=\the\dosplaywidowpenalty}%

As mentioned, this might noch work the way you intend. In my experience, it does a good job but sometimes messes up.

Thus, b) use \newpage or \pagebreak and see if the results are appealing.

    I had already tried these penalty settings, but they have no effect in Moderncv. If you compile, you'll see that the «Languages» (section title) remains in the first page, while their content begin in the second

  • Did you try the manual solutions? Are they a possible usecase? Commented Dec 9, 2016 at 6:55
  • Well, you can always use \pagebreak, but the whole point is to let LaTeX do it "automatically"
