# Changing the page number of the Table of Contents page

The format I must follow for my thesis is as follows:

Title page (unnumbered)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Committee Members page (unnumbered)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Copyright page (unnumbered)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Abstract (numbered)(page iii)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Dedication (numbered)(page iv)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Acknowledgements (numbered)(page v)

Blank page (unnumbered)

Table of Contents (numbered)(page vi-wherever it ends)

My issue is when the TOC is longer than 1 page, using \setcounterPpage}{6} sets the last page of the TOC to page 6 and not the first page. If I insert \setcounterPpage}{6} before \tableofcontents, a blank page numbered vi is inserted before the TOC. There is also a strange page vi that is added between the Dedication and Acknowledgements chapters, right after the blank unnumbered page after Dedication. Is there a way to fix the page number of the TOC itself?

• set the counter after the \clearpage before the toc, not after \tableofcontents. – barbara beeton Apr 20 '18 at 16:48
• Question: Who came up with the first numbered page to be 3? When i count, i come up with a different number. – Johannes_B Apr 22 '18 at 7:34
• Looking closer, it seems that you are looking for oneside instead of twoside. That will only produce right handed pages. The back will be empty when printing. Those pages will not be counted. Right now, you are confusing the typesetting routine. Checkout package showframe. – Johannes_B Apr 22 '18 at 7:37
• I have tried to set the \setcounter before \tableofcontents and it creates a blank, numbered page 6 before the toc and then puts the toc on page 7. – Alan Apr 22 '18 at 19:48
• @Johannes_B The numbering doesn't make any sense but that is what the grad school office is requiring. It is supposed to be double sided with all major chapters and front matter pages starting on the right side. If any of the front matter has an odd number of pages, like the toc for example, then the next section must start on the right side. – Alan Apr 22 '18 at 19:55
