I just downloaded Latex on a new computer. On my old computer, I was able to preview my build outputs in Adobe...on my new computer, I can't. It locks.

So I started digging a little and read that the new Adobe doesn't allow this to happen and people recommended Sumatra.

So I followed the steps at this link with the tutorial: How to configure TeXnicCenter 2.0 with Sumatra (2013--2016 version)

Still not working...the PDF is made but if I change anything in Latex, it isn't shown in the PDF preview. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

adobe acrobat on windows has always locked the file for writing, that is not a recent change. – David Carlisle Jun 25 '18 at 15:50
  • Really? I believe I used Adobe on my old computer and it would update if I rebuilt. Regardless, this isn't working for Sumatra which is the current problem. – Brett Jun 25 '18 at 15:53
  • can't help with sumatra as I haven't used it but someone will answer I am sure:-) – David Carlisle Jun 25 '18 at 16:00
  • Is the pdf file itself actually changed/updated? That is, after the changes in the LaTeX file, when you go to Windows Explorer and open the file from there (in Adobe Reader for example), do you see the result in the pdf? If yes, then something is wrong with the TeXnicCenter preview. If no, then you should be able to find some kind of error message in the log file, either that something is wrong with the LaTeX code itself that causes the compilation to abort, or that the pdf file is still locked in some way and LaTeX cannot write to that file. – Marijn Jun 26 '18 at 11:23
