I use at the picture above: \DeclareMathOperator{\vo}{vol}
And this is the complete line:

\[
\lim_{a}=\vo_{a}
\]

I can make that the a will be below the vol? (like the lim).

Use the starred version of the command: \DeclareMathOperator*
