# Unwanted blank page inserted after abstract

I'm creating a thesis document using the report style and I'm running into an issue where latex wants to insert an extra blank page after my abstract. I would like the abstract to be a single page and immediately followed by the 'DEDICATION' section on the following page.

If I delete a single line of text, I notice that the blank page goes away, so I'm guessing that the page is close to being overfull and that's why it tries to insert a new page, but due to widow/orphan protection it instead keeps all of the text on one page.

I have tried using the \nopagebreak option but that serves to place a single line of text on the next page (while getting rid of the blank page), which is not allowed by my formatting guidelines. I've searched around on this site and elsewhere and haven't found a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• (1) welcome, (2) \chapter(*) always starts on the next right hand page, so if the abstract is on page 1, the dedication will be on page 3. I probably not use \chapter(*) to just write the word DEDICATION, if needed write it by hand. If required by some requirement, then well need to locally redefine \cleardoublepage. – daleif Jul 4 '18 at 15:01
• The document is one sided (I tested using \if@twoside). The problem is caused by \doublespacing. I might add that double spacing is a switch on a typewriter and does not apply the typesetting. One can fake it better using \baselineskip=2\baselineskip. – John Kormylo Jul 4 '18 at 15:26
• I have tried variations of 'oneside' and 'openany' to no avail. It seems those are only useful for the 'book' document class rather than the report. – Sir Blobicus Jul 4 '18 at 15:32
• John, how can I determine the spacing I should use if I use the baselineskip instead of doublespacing? I want the spacing to match the rest of the document. \baselineskip=2\baselineskip seems to be spaced more than the rest of the document, but 1.5 seems less. – Sir Blobicus Jul 4 '18 at 15:34
• I stand corrected. The problem is caused by abstract. – John Kormylo Jul 4 '18 at 16:12

Looking into the abstract environment, one finds it ends with

\par\vfil\null\endtitlepage

So one can patch the abstract environment, to get rid of that \null which is creating the empty page. Note, however, that this changes the appearance if your abstract is shorter. So just use it, if needed.

\usepackage{etoolbox} % provides \patchcmd

to your preamble to remove this \null.
