I want to install pdfLatex to use with Pandoc. I know this is included with Tex Live and MikeTex. I am trying to install Tex Live and I would like to select a scheme which is smaller than the full scheme. Which ones include pdfLatex?

  • Welcome to TeX.SX! While the small (or even basic) scheme should contain pdflatex, the question is which packages you will use, because they might not be in a small scheme. – TeXnician Aug 23 '18 at 19:50

What operating system do you use? – uzsolt Aug 23 '18 at 22:06

When installing texlive you can choose between these installations:

Select scheme:
 a [X] full scheme (everything)
b [ ] medium scheme (small + more packages and languages)
 c [ ] small scheme (basic + xetex, metapost, a few languages)
d [ ] basic scheme (plain and latex)

All of them should include the enginge pdfLaTeX, I'd be very surprised, if even basic only had LaTeX.

However, for years I've been installing a customized version: I don't need many languages (english, german and french), but I like having all packages, because you never know.

Good luck!
