    What you could do is plot something like the top and bottom lines using \addplot3 then draw the circles (ellipses?) using regular tikz commands. The tricky bit is computing the x and y radii to scale. – John Kormylo Nov 30 '18 at 14:31

Because, exactly at the radius part, I could no longer move forward (I got literally lost, up till now).     @Raaja, Asymptote is considered a TeX friend, it uses TeX internally and it integrates well with LaTeX. It is basically a programming language (just as TeX) for creating 2D and 3D scenes.     @Raaja Thanks! I will try to do something. At least it is conceptually interesting, not sure if anyone has computed the tangents to circles in a 3d diagram so far. I hope to find the time to solve it. (In principle it is a combination of existing tricks.) – marmot Dec 5 '18 at 16:13

    @Raaja Thanks, I do not think I deserve it but I will try to find a solution soon. These days are crazy, I only have 5 minutes windows here and there, so I could not patch things together. The analytic formula here, which is of course trivial in the case of circles, is actually only a downgrade of a style that I wrote for this answer, but then there were unexpected difficulties when patching things together. – marmot Dec 12 '18 at 7:53
