I am working on my PhD thesis and I get this error, I have no clue why. I think is a duplicate package but google suggested to use %\usepackage{fontenc} but then I got the error "The fontspec package requires either XeTeX or LuaTeX." I am working with texmaker, pdflatex and use make file to compile my document. surprisingly, fontspec package was working for me before with the same build options.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me?

  • Welcome to TeX.SX! Coud you please make a compilable minimal working example (MWE) that allows others to reporduce your issue? – leandriis May 1 at 9:39
  • @leandriis How can I upload my thesis? it's a huge file. – AH2012 May 1 at 9:40
  • Welcome to TeX.SX! Quite likely you have come conflicting packages. I recommend commenting out unnecessary lines, one by one, and then compiling until you find what is causing the problem. This way you can cut your files down to a minimal working example that clearly shows what the problem is. Quite likely at this point you will be able to solve the problem yourself but if not post your MWE (without the commented out lines) and some one is likely to be able to help you. – Andrew May 1 at 9:41

    Do not upload your complete thesis but try to make a minimal working example. To do so, comment out parts of your document, recompile and see if the error persists. If so, repeat until you have the smallest possible document that still produces the error. – leandriis May 1 at 9:41
  • @leandriis and @Andrew I got the error when I add the \usepackage{flexisym}. – AH2012 May 1 at 9:55

Your large code can be reduced to the following MWE:

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{flexisym}
\usepackage{classicthesis}

\begin{document}
text
\end{document}

The flexisym package is aparently incompatible with the mathpazo package that is loaded by classicthesis upon compiling with pdflatex.

You have the following two options to overcome this:

  1. Remove flexisym and compile with pdflatex

  2. Keep flexisym and compile with xelatex instead.

  • That problem solved, but I got this error now ` "\providecommand{\singleletter}[1]{#1}%"' , by any chance you can help me. – AH2012 May 1 at 10:14

    @AH2012: With the information you provided, the error is not reproducible for me. So please make a MWE. – leandriis May 1 at 10:29

    You could also pass the option palatino=false to classicthesis and then load the font of your choice, including a newer math package than mathpazo. If you also load a package like unicode-math, eulerpx or newpxmath, though, it is unlikely that you also want flexisym. – Davislor May 1 at 17:16
