I'm working on a thesis now, and like many theses, it's largely just a bunch of past papers stapled together.

I find you have to do a lot of tedious reformatting when you want to turn a paper into a chapter of a thesis. e.g. change all references from my_figure.pdf to paper_1/my_figure.pdf, change \sections to \subsections, make sure there are not name-conflicts in labels, etc.

Is there some more elegant way to do this in latex that would do one or more of the following?:

  • define a "namespace" such that references made within the chapter can only be referenced from that chapter - removing potential for accidental reference-name clashes
  • All sections/subsections are demoted one level.
  • references to files are relative to the folder containing the sub-document.
