I am having trouble with a figure that has three vertically-aligned sub figures (each with subcaptions below) and the figure caption to the side. I tried using the structure from this thread: Subfigure with caption on the side

however, the main figure caption keeps on going to the bottom with everything center aligned. I tried troubleshooting and found if i remove the main figure caption function and just put the raw text in, then it will be formatted correctly. I am new to latex, so sorry if this is something obvious or naive. Thanks in advance for your help.

here is a dummy section of my code with all packages:

\usepackage{array}
\usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry}
\usepackage{sidecap}
\usepackage{caption}
\usepackage{subcaption}
\usepackage{authblk}
\usepackage{floatrow}
\usepackage{adjustbox}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[version=4]{mhchem}
\usepackage[round]{natbib}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\begin{figure}
    \label{fig:1}
    \centering
    \begin{minipage}[t]{0.65\textwidth}
    \begin{subfigure}[t]{\linewidth}
        \centering
        \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{image-1}
        \subcaption{1}
    \end{subfigure}\hfill

    \begin{subfigure}[t]{\linewidth}
        \centering
        \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{image-2}
        \subcaption{2}
    \end{subfigure}\hfill

    \begin{subfigure}[t]{\linewidth}
        \centering
        \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{image-3}
        \subcaption{3}
    \end{subfigure}
    \end{minipage}%
    \begin{minipage}[t]{0.25\textwidth}
        \caption{Main figure caption text blah.}% removing this function and replacing with text solves formatting problem.
    \end{minipage}
\end{figure}
