I would like to typeset the surnames of the authors of the document differently (maybe in smalls caps are best), so that it is clear which names are surnames.

Is \author{Vincent \textsc{Van Gogh}} the best way to do this, or is there a more "profound" way (maybe also leading to correct hidden PDF tags/metadata, if such a thing exists) to tell LaTeX which of the names are surnames?
