I am currently struggling with exporting an svg that I prepared in Inkscape and would really appreciate any help or hints. I have been using the MWE from the SVG package documentation ( https://ctan.org/pkg/svg ) in chapter 4. I will provide it here aswell, for the sake of completeness:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{svg}
\usepackage[off]{svg-extract}
\svgsetup{clean=true}
%\pdfsuppresswarningpagegroup=1
\usepackage{relsize}
\usepackage{subcaption}
\begin{document}
    \begin{figure}
        \begin{minipage}{.5\linewidth}
            \includesvg[width=\linewidth]{svg-example}%
            \subcaption{This text is too large!}
        \end{minipage}%
        \begin{minipage}{.5\linewidth}
            \includesvg[width=\linewidth,pretex=\relscale{0.6}]{svg-example}%
            \subcaption{This text fits better.}
        \end{minipage}
        \caption{An example figure with \LaTeX~support}\label{fig:example}
    \end{figure}
    \begin{figure}\centering
        \includesvg[%
        width=.5\linewidth,inkscapelatex=false,extractformat={pdf,eps}%
        ]{svg-example}%
        \caption{The same example figure without \LaTeX~support}
    \end{figure}
\end{document}

I am unsure how to provide the svg I was using, but I promise there exists an "svg-example.svg" in the same directory as the tex file above. I will include it here as a png, but it is in svg format within the directory.

I have shell-escape enabled (--shell-escape as parameter for pdflatex.exe in TeXStudio) as well as Inkscape in the system path. The log, which contains the error messages at the bottom, follows here:

My obvious guess is that for some reason it puts ".svg.svg" (i.e. the file extension twice) after the file name, but I have absolutely no idea why it does that, and also no idea how to fix it.

I have tried converting the svg files to pdf manually, i.e. inkscape -z -D --export-latex --file="svg-example.svg" --export-pdf="svg-example.svg_svg-tex.pdf" (please note that I changed the ".svg.svg" into ".svg"), which did work and created the pdf file correctly. However, when placing the 2 files into the subdirectory "svg-inkscape", it still does not work, and I get the errors:

The generated files from Inkscape are there in the correct folder, however! I guess this is due to quotation marks, the curly bracket or sth, but I really dont know what is causing this and how I can fix it.

This is my first post here on Stackexchange, so if I forgot to provide some info, please let me know! I'm really grateful for any help, so that I can continue writing my thesis, and stop having to waste hours and hours on this!

Best regards,

Tripedior

    This looks like a bug to me, possibly introduced by the recent LaTeX kernel update. (I can't test it on my machine right now, but you seem to run all the right commands.) Both the inkscape export command and the graphics inclusion command have a spurious .svg. If others can reproduce the error, you should email the package maintainer. (There is a but tracker linked in the documentation, but that seems to be for Inkscape itself, which also is on Gitlab.. A bit confusing, so email is probably safest.) – schtandard Oct 8 '19 at 9:15
  • Thanks @schtandard for the hint! Luckily I had the choice to roll back to the version that I installed on August 6th 2019. With this version, the exact same code as above compiles without issues. It seems like the errors are indeed caused by a recent update. I will however still keep this open (even though I can avoid the issue by using an older version) in case someone has a solution/workaround, just in case someone comes across the same issue as I did and does not have the option to roll back. – Tripedior Oct 8 '19 at 12:39
  • Still, you should email the developer. If you don't want to, I can do it. This should be relatively easy to fix, but they have to know. – schtandard Oct 8 '19 at 15:35
  • I will do it, however I'm gonna wait for someone to confirm they have the same issue first, just to make sure that the problem for sure is not on my end, but general. – Tripedior Oct 8 '19 at 16:03

This is a non-answer but I wanted to post the code, I'll post a full answer here once the eventual fix is worked out.

Could you test this with your svg?

  • works! My guess is that this is redefining a command in the svg package? or in the Latex kernel? – Tripedior Oct 9 '19 at 10:02
  • @Tripedior latex kernel and graphics package. Note that the version here undoes the intent of the change (which was to make utf-8 non-ascii characters and spaces safe in filenames) but it restores your document working. I have a plan to have a version that meets both aims, I may add a second test file here this evening to ask you to try, if that is OK? – David Carlisle Oct 9 '19 at 11:32
  • Sure, I will test it tomorrow in the morning in that case and will give you feedback right after. – Tripedior Oct 9 '19 at 12:19
