I would like to attach a dagger symbol (\textdagger) as a superscript in front of a word (not in math). How can I do it?

You can use \textsuperscript.

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Hello\textsuperscript{\textdagger} world.
\end{document}

Or (big thanks to barbara beeton!)

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Hello {}\textsuperscript{\textdagger}world.
\end{document}

    Er, the question says in front of a word. – barbara beeton Mar 1 '20 at 19:14

    @barbarabeeton Thanks! I did not read carefully... – user194703 Mar 1 '20 at 19:16
  • What's {} for? – egreg Mar 1 '20 at 20:29

    @egreg Someone recommended "in doubt, use braces". ;-) The analogous syntax works in math mode, so is easier to remember. – user194703 Mar 1 '20 at 21:04
