I do not know where the problem is but I have issues centering tables. I have tried \centering and \begin{center} but they are still left-aligned. Does someone of you know where the problem lies?

does not take arguments. Additionally I would probably not usetabular*
heresiunitx
in the second table, but not in the first one? You could remove all the\phantom
commands if you usedsiunitx
. Please also clarify: Do you want caption and table notes to be as wide as the table or as wide as the whole textwidth. Why did you stretch the table to be that wide? Couldn't you place the long versions of the abbreviations in the table itself instead of below it? What's the reason to use\footnotesize
for the first table? It would fit perfectly if you used a normalsize font.
