The TrueType scalable font standard was developed by Apple to compete with Adobe Type 1 (type1) fonts used in PostScript (postscript). It has become the standard for Mac and Windows OS. TrueType has been developed into [OpenType] (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/otff.htm) which is the new standard for most OS.
