As a physicist in academic research I came to use LaTeX about 20 years ago, in the good(?) old days when certain office packages were still highly unreliable. I have written all my papers and two theses with Latex, and even used it for transparencies in some occasions. By giving technical support for other writers over recent years, I have also found that Latex - especially when combined with biblatex - is a highly flexible and efficient way to implement the intricate formatting demands for citations in the legal sciences.
